Meet the Team

Josabeth

President

I was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, and raised by strong women who taught me resilience and perseverance. After being widowed young, I worked hard to build a better life, eventually coming to the U.S. As a single mother, my son Samuel is my greatest motivation.

In Connecticut, I found support through Havenly, completed a bookkeeping certification, and started my own cleaning business.

Today, I’m an empowered woman committed to helping others grow. I believe in the power of financial education and the strength we build when we support each other.

Isabel

Vice-president

I came to the U.S. from Chiapas, Mexico in 2007 to give my children a safer, more secure future. After years working in a bakery, I began studying English and earned my GED through New Haven’s adult education program.

Joining Havenly changed my life. I gained new skills, discovered my passion for interpreting, and now work as a professional interpreter.

As vice-president of the Havenly Women’s Financial Network, I’m committed to helping immigrant women build financial security and access better opportunities together.

Sandra

Treasurer

I'm from Guatemala and immigrated to this country 30 years ago. From a very young age, my mother instilled in us the importance of helping others, which is why I've been deeply passionate about being involved in the community for the past 6 years.

As a mother of three and an entrepreneur, I am also the owner of "La Cocina de Sandra". I am also a Havenly graduate, which has been instrumental in my development and commitment to the community.

I'm excited to continue working on projects that benefit my community and support women in achieving their financial and personal goals. Our goal is to teach more women how to save for the future and provide them with tools to improve their financial stability.

Lorenza

Secretary

Born in Tlaxcala, Mexico, I’m the oldest of five and learned early on the value of responsibility, saving, and hard work. I studied accounting, worked as a secretary, and helped support my family.

Since arriving in the U.S. in 1996, I’ve raised three children, learned English alongside them, and continued saving through my businesses selling tamales and baking Mexican bread.

As Secretary of the Havenly Women’s Financial Network, I’m committed to helping immigrant women build financial freedom through saving, education, and mutual support.

Maria

Leave of absence

I was born in Mexico and came to this country in 1999.

After many years of work, I had the opportunity to participate in the multicultural, educational and training programs at Havenly to work in food careers. Thanks to this experience and Havenly's support, my husband and I opened our restaurant.

Now, the next step, with other alumnae and friends, is founding the Havenly Women's Financial Network. Through this cooperative, we can help each other better understand personal finances for the benefit of our families.

Our Stories

In collaboration with the caring efforts of four Yale students from first-generation, low-income, and immigrant parents, the women at Havenly Women’s Financial Network have shared their stories through a creative zine project titled, “Radical Roots: Havenly Women’s Financial Network.” Conversations with the women motivated the students to create a zine that would help build solidarity networks through storytelling and information sharing between members of the Havenly Women’s Financial Network and the New Haven community. The goal of this project is to help bridge the personal gap between members of the organization and interested people in New Haven who might want to support the women’s efforts. The zine is currently available in Spanish and English and includes an introduction, the network’s economic model, stories of the women, and strategies to support their endeavors. Download the file to below to access the women's beautiful stories.
